Physical Activity

2.3.1 Key policy interventions

Policy Interventions that have been shown to increase physical activity at population level include:

  • Mandate daily physical education and active play in all schools, ensuring levels of moderate to vigorous activity for children and adolescents meet global guidelines.
  • Fund community-based youth sports programmes and provide safe, accessible spaces for unstructured play.
  • Encourage workplaces to implement active breaks, offer standing desks, and promote stair use over lifts.
  • Support active commuting by investing in pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, cycling lanes, and secure bike storage at workplaces and schools.
  • Introduce fiscal incentives for employers who offer workplace wellness programmes and subsidised fitness memberships.
  • Deliver targeted health campaigns through social media and traditional media to raise awareness of the benefits of regular physical activity.
  • Develop and maintain parks, green spaces, and recreational facilities that are accessible to all age groups and abilities.
  • Provide subsidised group exercise classes and tailored activities for older adults, such as walking groups and strength training sessions.
  • Encourage cross-sector collaboration between healthcare providers, schools, local authorities, and sports organisations to integrate physical activity into routine care and community life.
  • Incorporate physical activity promotion into healthcare consultations, including routine advice and referrals to exercise programmes.
  • Implement urban planning policies that prioritise walkable neighbourhoods, mixed-use developments, and safe active transport routes.
